Who here still believes in the old concept of working till you’re 67, retiring and then finally doing the things you really wanted to do with your life?
I too had the idea until about five years ago when I read a book called The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss, and in that book, I learned about a new social class. He called them the new rich. Now, the new rich don’t necessarily have a lot of money, but what they do have is a lot of free time and how they choose to spend that free time is by having great experiences. Tim Ferriss talks about this idea of the mini-retirement, that spending a few years of your life passionately involved in a project you love and a business you want to create, and then when that passion is used up, taking some time off, going off and learning to surf or to ski or to learn a new language or travel.
Now, when I first read this, I was really shocked. I mean I had been brought up with the idea that I was going to work in a job my whole life. Not necessarily enjoying it, but you know, I had to do it. I had to pay the bills, I had a family to raise so I just knuckled down and got on with it. And then when I retired then I’d have all the time and all the money to do what I really wanted to do with my life.
I felt inspired. I was going to go and learn how to surf because in my twenties I had been to Bali and I’d been to Hawaii and I’d seen those guys up on their surfboards and it just looked amazing. And I made a promise to myself that one day, one day I would definitely learn how to do that. Well, 20 years have gone by and I was 45 and I had the middle-aged spread and I was basically unfit. So, how on earth could I possibly go and stand on a surfboard? Cause I had a sense that this is going to be a hard thing to do.
Another idea that I read in that book was about setting yourself up so that success is inevitable. How often do we do that? Often we set ourselves up so that success is highly unlikely to ever happen. So I had a think, I knew I had to go to the gym and get fit, but who here joins gyms and then he goes once a month?
Yeah, I was exactly the same. So I went to my local gym and spoke to one of the personal trainers. You know the guys who showed you around when you first joined the gym and you thought, yes, I’ll definitely get one of those when I get around to going. And of course, then you only go once in a blue moon. Anyway, I spoke to Will, it just happened to be the captain of the Brighton rugby team and I told him my plan that I wanted to go to Bali and learn how to surf and he looked me up and down and he said, well, you’re going to have to come at least three times a week for probably six months. And I gulped and went, oh, okay. And I booked my first session and after six months, I haven’t missed a session.
Why? Why was I suddenly being able to go three times a week for six months having never managed to go more than once a month for years? Well, I had a very key thing in place. It’s called accountability. There was someone there every Monday, every Wednesday, and every Friday expecting me to turn up at nine 30 in the morning and they were going to push me beyond my limits every single time.
If a middle-aged man can go to the gym three times a week for six months and still get up on a surfboard in Bali, that you too can achieve that goal that you’ve been putting off for so long by applying some of the lessons that I learned along the way. Lessons like always challenge orthodox models of thinking. Make sure you’re enjoying your life today and don’t put everything on hold until tomorrow. Set yourself up so that success is inevitable.
And finally, I do passionately believe the greatest risk in life is taking no risk at all.
